AI Infrastructure Is Moving Toward Agent-Driven Development

At Beyond Summit, Anush Elangovan VP of AI Software at AMD, and one of the leading engineers helping shape the developer experience across the AMD ecosystem, shared his perspective on how AI is rapidly changing the future of software development and infrastructure operations. Over the past several years, Elangovan has become widely recognized within the AMD AI community for his work on GPU software, developer tooling, performance optimization, and helping improve how developers build and scale workloads on AMD platforms.

The presentation focused on how dramatically the AMD developer ecosystem has evolved over the last several years. Early concerns around usability, tooling maturity, and developer accessibility have increasingly shifted as the ROCm ecosystem has expanded and more engineering resources have gone into improving the developer experience.

Instead of framing the conversation around simply improving traditional tooling, the discussion centered around a much larger transition happening across the industry: software development itself is changing. AI systems are beginning to take on larger portions of debugging, profiling, testing, optimization, and operational workflows, fundamentally changing how developers interact with infrastructure.


Why Systems Thinking Matters More Than Ever

One of the biggest themes throughout the presentation was that developers are spending less time manually handling repetitive engineering work and more time focused on systems-level problem solving, validation, and architecture design. Instead of writing every implementation detail by hand, developers are increasingly orchestrating workflows, defining goals, and building verification frameworks that AI systems can execute against.

As Elangovan explained during the session, “Anything that you do repetitively or mundane work on your computer, you should increasingly just let agents do that.”

The talk also emphasized that successful AI-assisted development still depends heavily on human judgment. Verification, testing environments, and clearly defined success criteria remain critical, especially as organizations begin relying more heavily on autonomous systems to generate and modify code.


AI-Native Infrastructure Is Beginning to Emerge

The presentation also explored how AI-assisted workflows are already accelerating engineering velocity today. Elangovan described using agent-based systems to troubleshoot infrastructure issues, automate validation processes, and iterate on projects significantly faster than traditional development workflows would typically allow.

One of the examples highlighted during the session was Spur, a new AI-native scheduler designed for large-scale AI infrastructure environments. The project was built to support bare metal training and inference workloads while maintaining compatibility with existing Slurm CLI workflows many developers already rely on today.

According to the presentation, Spur introduces a more modern approach to workload orchestration for distributed AI infrastructure while simplifying many of the operational layers that have historically become increasingly complex over time. 


Developer Tooling Is Expanding Beyond Human Interfaces

Another major takeaway from the session was that infrastructure tooling is no longer being designed only for traditional human-facing interfaces like dashboards and profilers. Increasingly, runtimes, libraries, compilers, and infrastructure layers are being exposed in ways that autonomous systems can directly interact with and optimize.

Rather than developers manually navigating every infrastructure layer themselves, the future workflow described during the session involves AI systems continuously interacting with infrastructure environments, surfacing issues, validating outputs, and improving performance behind the scenes. Human developers remain critical, but their role increasingly shifts toward strategy, architecture, oversight, and verification.


Testing Across AMD Instinct GPU Generations

Another interesting part of the discussion focused on how development workflows are evolving across multiple generations of AMD Instinct GPUs. During the Q&A portion of the session, Elangovan explained that his team had been testing and validating workloads across systems including the AMD Instinct MI325X, MI355X, and upcoming MI450 platforms.

He also described work around cross-generation compatibility, including tooling designed to help developers build and validate kernels for newer GPU architectures even when direct access to that hardware may be limited. The goal, according to the discussion, is to reduce friction for developers building AI workloads across rapidly evolving infrastructure environments while maintaining a more consistent software experience between hardware generations.


The Bigger Takeaway

The broader message throughout the presentation was that the next phase of AI infrastructure will not only be shaped by raw hardware performance, but by how effectively organizations can build faster development loops around their infrastructure.

As AI-assisted engineering becomes more deeply integrated into infrastructure operations, teams that successfully combine scalable compute with automated development workflows may ultimately move faster than organizations relying solely on traditional software development approaches.
