CES 2026 (Jan 6–9 in Las Vegas) felt less like a consumer gadget show and more like a preview of where the next layer of computing is headed. Yes, there were plenty of delightfully techy demos, but the center of gravity was clear: AI is shifting from “an app” to “a permanent layer of infrastructure”; showing up in devices, factories, vehicles, hospitals, and the data centers that power all of it.

Yes, there were plenty of delightfully techy demos, but the center of gravity was clear: AI is shifting from “an app” to “a permanent layer of infrastructure”; showing up in devices, factories, vehicles, hospitals, and the data centers that power all of it. 

Below is what we saw repeated across keynotes, booths, and side stages and what it likely means for teams building real AI systems in 2026.


1) AI Moved From “Features” to Agents and Platforms

The most common pattern wasn’t “AI inside a product.” It was AI as a persistent assistant layer; agents, “digital twins,” and hybrid approaches that blend on-device inference with cloud scale when needed. CES framing explicitly called out AI agents, digital twins, and AI on devices as a defining expectation for this year’s show.

On the show floor, you could see this in:

 * PC ecosystems racing toward agent-style assistants (positioned as always-available, cross-device “super agents”).
 * A renewed push for edge + on-device AI (privacy, latency, and offline capability as selling points), paired with cloud backends for heavier workloads.

Why it mattered: as AI becomes an always-on layer, reliability and predictability become table stakes. The “wow” moments are increasingly system-level: latency consistency, cost per token, memory footprint, and how well the stack behaves under real load.


2) Data Center AI Was Framed as A Cost-And-Systems Problem, Not a Chip Problem

The most important infrastructure messaging wasn’t “more TOPS.” It was about reducing end-to-end cost and complexity through tighter platform design (compute + networking + storage + software).

AMD emphasized a longer-horizon infrastructure arc; previewing next-gen Instinct roadmapping and the rack-scale direction, including MI500-series timing.

What was popular: anything that translated AI scaling into operational terms: efficiency, power, cooling, networking fabrics, and cost predictability.


3) “Physical AI” and Robotics Were Everywhere

Robotics had a real presence this year; humanoids, home chore concepts, warehouse-adjacent systems, and plenty of “AI pets” and social robots. While it’s still early, this concept is moving from spectacle toward capability + interaction (language-understanding, navigation, task execution).

Why it mattered: physical AI is a forcing function for infrastructure:

 * tighter latency requirements
 * sensor fusion and multimodal pipelines
 * continuous learning / deployment loops
 * a heavier emphasis on reliability and safety

This is where “AI as infrastructure” stops being a metaphor.


4) Digital Health Shifted Toward Longevity + Clinical Workflow Reality

Digital health didn’t feel like a separate track; it felt fused into the broader AI theme. CTA’s Media Days coverage highlighted longevity technologies and accelerating digital health tools as a top-line CES story.

What drew attention:

 * diagnostics and measurement tools that look increasingly like software + models + regulated workflows
 * consumer health that’s converging with clinical pathways (and therefore needs cleaner data boundaries and auditing)

Takeaway: healthcare AI is pulling infrastructure toward tighter controls: data governance, reproducibility, explainability tooling, and cost models that finance teams can actually defend.


5) PC and Device Form Factors Went “Weirder,” but the Underlying Reason Was Practical

Rollables, foldables, new display tech, and odd hybrid devices were some of the most photographed and shared moments. But the underlying story wasn’t novelty for novelty’s sake. It was the industry searching for:

 * better I/O patterns for AI-assisted workflows (more screen real estate, more context)
 * new “default” interfaces for agentic computing (voice, glasses, multimodal input)
 * improved local compute to support on-device inference and privacy


6) CES Foundry

CES itself signposted the transition with programming like CES Foundry, positioned as a home for AI and quantum innovation, and its broader “what’s happening” coverage emphasizing day-by-day industry themes.

The common thread across Foundry-style sessions: fewer product pitches, more discussion of how countries and enterprises build capacity; compute, talent, supply chain, energy, and governance.
