The AI infrastructure landscape is changing. Learn why AI agents, open infrastructure, and faster iteration are replacing CUDA as the industry's competitive moat.

The End of the CUDA Moat

For a long time, the AI infrastructure conversation revolved around CUDA.

The assumption was simple: NVIDIA’s dominance came from software lock-in. CUDA was the moat. Developers were too invested, tooling was too mature, and moving to another platform felt too expensive, too risky, or too painful. That assumption is breaking down.

At this year’s Beyond Summit, Anush Elangovan laid out a different reality emerging inside AI infrastructure: the future competitive advantage is no longer tied to a single programming model or ecosystem. The new moat is speed.

Not GPU speed alone. Organizational speed. Development speed. Iteration speed. Problem-solving speed. And AI agents are accelerating that shift faster than most organizations realize.


The Old Moat Was Developer Friction

Historically, CUDA’s biggest advantage was not just performance. It was familiarity. Developers knew the stack. The tooling worked. The workflows were established. Meanwhile, early AMD developer experiences often required more manual debugging, weaker documentation, fragmented tooling, and deeper systems expertise to accomplish the same work.

As Anush explained during his session, that gap has narrowed dramatically over the last two years. AMD invested heavily into ROCm, developer tooling, documentation, hackathons, ecosystem support, and framework compatibility. But more importantly, the entire definition of “developer experience” is changing.

The future developer experience is no longer optimized primarily for humans. It is increasingly optimized for agents.


Software Is Becoming Tokens

One of the strongest points from the presentation was deceptively simple:

“Software is just tokens.”

The implication is enormous.

If AI agents can increasingly navigate compilers, runtimes, debugging workflows, profiling tools, kernel optimization, infrastructure orchestration, and framework integrations, then the traditional switching costs between ecosystems begin collapsing.

The bottleneck is no longer:

 * Can a human manually learn this stack?
 * Can a human spend weeks debugging this environment?
 * Can a human port this codebase?

The bottleneck becomes:

 * How fast can your organization iterate?
 * How effectively can your agents operate?
 * How accessible is your infrastructure to automation?

That changes the competitive landscape entirely.


The New Advantage Is Agentic Velocity

Anush described debugging workflows that previously required extensive manual profiling and visualization work. Now, agents compare hundreds of thousands of dispatches automatically, isolate failures, identify overwritten signals, propose fixes, validate results, and rerun tests with minimal human intervention.

Tasks that historically took days can now happen overnight. Sometimes literally overnight.

He described running multiple agents against MI300X, MI325X, and MI355X systems while sleeping, waking up only when the agents required additional inputs. That changes what matters.

The companies moving fastest are no longer necessarily the ones with the most entrenched software ecosystem. They are the ones building:

 * Better verification harnesses
 * Faster feedback loops
 * Agent-accessible tooling
 * Open infrastructure surfaces
 * Systems-level operational thinking

That is a very different moat.


Open Ecosystems Benefit Most From This Shift

This is also why the “CUDA moat” narrative increasingly feels outdated. In an agentic world, portability improves dramatically.

Languages become less important. Syntax matters less. Framework abstraction improves. Intermediate representations become interchangeable. Infrastructure surfaces become programmable through agents instead of requiring deep manual specialization.

That favors open systems. It favors environments where tooling, runtimes, compilers, schedulers, and orchestration layers are exposed, scriptable, and accessible.

Anush repeatedly emphasized this idea during the session: the question is no longer “can a human get to it?”

The question is:

“Can the agent get to it?”

That subtle shift has major implications for AI infrastructure providers.

The organizations positioned best for the next phase of AI development may not be the ones protecting tightly controlled ecosystems. They may be the ones exposing infrastructure surfaces broadly enough for agents to optimize across the entire stack.


Infrastructure Is Becoming AI-Native

One of the clearest examples from the session was Spur, an AI-native scheduler Anush and his collaborators built as a modern alternative to legacy Slurm workflows.

Instead of layering additional plugins and abstractions onto aging infrastructure models, Spur was designed around first-principles thinking:

 * AI-native orchestration
 * Bare metal scheduling
 * Cross-cluster communication
 * Native networking integrations
 * Compatibility with existing Slurm CLI workflows
 * Agent-driven development and testing

What stood out was not just the technical architecture. It was the speed. According to Anush, Spur was one of six major projects created in roughly a month through heavily agent-assisted workflows. That pace would have been difficult to imagine only a few years ago.


The Real Competitive Divide

The companies that struggle in this next phase will likely not fail because they lack GPUs.

They will struggle because their infrastructure, tooling, workflows, and organizations are optimized for slower software development cycles.

Agentic development compresses timelines dramatically. But it also raises the importance of:

 * verification and validation
 * systems thinking
 * testing harnesses
 * operational discipline
 * infrastructure accessibility
 * reproducibility

As Anush put it repeatedly throughout the session: “Trust, but verify.”

The organizations that combine open infrastructure with strong operational rigor may ultimately move faster than those relying purely on ecosystem inertia.


The CUDA Moat Is Becoming a Speed Moat

CUDA is still important. NVIDIA still has massive ecosystem momentum. None of that disappears overnight. But the competitive foundation is changing.

The moat is no longer simply:

 * proprietary tooling
 * language familiarity
 * ecosystem lock-in
 * accumulated developer habits

The moat is becoming:

 * iteration velocity
 * agent-enabled workflows
 * infrastructure openness
 * systems-level thinking
 * operational execution speed

That is a fundamentally different industry dynamic than the one AI infrastructure operated under even two years ago. And it may explain why the AI ecosystem suddenly feels like it is accelerating much faster than expected.
