AMD’s MI300X, MI325X, and MI355X GPUs deliver breakthrough performance and efficiency, redefining AI inference economics. See the TensorWave advantage.

The TCO War for Inference: New Benchmarks Show AMD's MI355X Has the Economic Edge

In the world of AI infrastructure, the ultimate test isn't just raw performance; it's the real-world economics of serving models in production. That's why the recent launch of InferenceMAX by SemiAnalysis is a game-changer. This open-source, automated benchmarking initiative provides a transparent, real-time view of how the industry's top GPUs perform on practical AI inference workloads.

The results are clear and compelling: AMD's Instinct GPUs, particularly the flagship MI355X, consistently outperform NVIDIA's offerings in the metrics that matter most for production AI: total cost of ownership (TCO) and power efficiency.

It's important to note that InferenceMAX focuses exclusively on inference—the process of running a trained model to generate results. This report provides a critical look at the performance and economics of serving AI at scale.

At TensorWave, we've built our cloud on this vision. The InferenceMAX report provides independent proof that the combination of AMD's advanced hardware and the rapidly maturing ROCm software stack offers a powerful, cost-effective, and strategically sound alternative to the status quo for production AI.

Here is a breakdown of the key results.

The MI355X: A True B200 Competitor, Winning on Inference TCO

The benchmarks show the MI355X in a tight race with the B200 on raw throughput, but consistently winning on the crucial metric of TCO for inference.

 * TCO Wins in Practical Scenarios: The MI355X delivers a lower TCO per million tokens than the B200 on vLLM for key enterprise workloads like reasoning (Llama 3 70B FP4) and summarization (GPT-OSS 120B FP4).

A Massive Leap in Power Efficiency: The MI355X achieves a ~3x better tokens-per-megawatt score compared to the previous generation, a pivotal advantage for enterprises looking to scale AI sustainably.

The Broader AMD Portfolio: A Pattern of Value in Inference

The strong performance of the MI355X is not an anomaly. The results show a consistent pattern of excellence across the entire AMD Instinct family for inference workloads.

 * MI325X: TCO Leadership: The MI325X beats the NVIDIA H200 on TCO across all interactivity levels on key benchmarks.
 * MI300X: Memory Advantage Shines: The MI300X leverages its superior memory bandwidth and capacity to outperform the NVIDIA H100 in specific inference regimes.

The Silent Win: Software Maturity & Stability for Inference

Perhaps the most significant finding from the report is the rapid maturation of the software stack for inference. SemiAnalysis reported that AMD’s ROCm and vLLM stack presented fewer bugs and was easier to fix compared to competing hardware.

This is a clear signal that the open ROCm 7.0 ecosystem is ready for production AI.

The TensorWave Advantage: Where Great Hardware Meets Superior Architecture

The InferenceMAX results show the baseline power of the hardware. On TensorWave's purpose-built platform, that performance gets even better, especially for inference.

Our architecture is engineered to amplify AMD's advantages:

 * True Hardware Multi-Tenancy: Our platform leverages AMD's physical partitioning (XCDs), a definitive architectural advantage for inference. This allows us to run multiple models on a single GPU with true hardware-level segmentation, eliminating the "noisy neighbor" problem and maximizing compute saturation in a way software virtualization cannot.
 * Sustained Peak Performance: Our advanced Direct Liquid Cooling ensures that the powerful MI355X runs at its full 1400W TDP without thermal throttling, delivering sustained, uncompromised inference performance.

A True Partnership: We are not just a hardware provider. Our deep, AMD-native expertise and "white-glove" support ensure you are getting the absolute maximum performance from the platform for your specific inference workloads.

In Summary: The Industry's Leaders Are Betting on AMD

The neutral, open-source InferenceMAX benchmark provides a clear takeaway: the AI infrastructure landscape is not a monopoly. The results prove that for many of the most common and cost-sensitive enterprise workloads, AMD's Instinct GPUs deliver superior TCO and power efficiency.

This leadership in performance and efficiency is not just theoretical; it's driving major strategic decisions at the highest levels of the AI industry. This was validated this week when AMD's Dr. Lisa Su and OpenAI's Sam Altman announced a landmark partnership to build the next generation of AI data centers, powered by AMD Instinct accelerators.

This massive vote of confidence from the world's leading AI company confirms the trajectory: with a rapidly maturing software stack and a powerful hardware architecture, AMD is a leader in the future of open, efficient AI infrastructure.

As Dr. Lisa Su, AMD's Chair and CEO, notes in the report:

“The open-source InferenceMAX benchmark gives the community transparent, nightly results that inspire trust and accelerate progress. It highlights the competitive TCO performance of our AMD Instinct MI300, MI325X, and MI355X GPUs across diverse workloads, underscoring the strength of our platform and our commitment to giving developers real-time visibility into our software progress.”

And from our own Darrick Horton, CEO of TensorWave:

“At TensorWave, we’re building a next-generation cloud on AMD GPUs because we believe innovation thrives when customers have strong alternatives. InferenceMAX™ reinforces that vision by providing open source, reproducible benchmarks that track throughput, efficiency, and cost across the latest hardware and software. By cutting through synthetic numbers and highlighting real-world inference performance, it helps customers see the full potential of AMD platforms for AI at scale.”
