What Is the AMD Instinct MI355X? Features, Performance, and Use Cases

Since its debut, the AMD Instinct MI355X GPU has quickly become one of the most influential enterprise AI GPUs in the data center market. As the benefits of running workloads on these accelerators have continued to stack up, the MI355X has become an increasingly important part of the AI infrastructure ecosystem.

As the demand for increased compute continues to grow, the hardware's capabilities have to be developed to keep up. The companies that secure reliable, high-performance compute are the ones positioned to lead AI and early adopters of the MI355X are experiencing just that. 

Delivering expanded GPU availability, improved price-performance, and the ability to diversify beyond reliance on a single accelerator ecosystem, the MI355X has given hyperscalers and their customers a compelling reason to rethink their accelerator strategy. This blog examines the architecture of the MI355X, why providers are adopting it, and who can benefit from it. 


MI355X Tech Specs

The MI355X features a 288GB HBM3E memory capacity at speeds of up to 8 TB/s - 50% more capacity than NVIDIA's B200 - enabling models of up to 520 billion parameters to run on a single GPU, significantly reducing latency and enabling faster time-to-first-token for large inference workloads. 

Over its predecessor MI300 series, the MI355X delivers a 35X improvement in inference performance, also supporting FP4 and FP6 precision formats, critical for modern quantized deployments, giving cloud providers confidence in offering it for production-scale inference. 

Intercommunication is also optimized, with AMD’s Infinity Fabric delivering 1,075 GB/s of throughput between chips across the eight GPU per node topology. This structure provides the foundation for large training runs and sets up the cluster-scale deployment that make the MI355X relevant not just for inference, but for frontier model training as well.

Transitioning to the CDNA4 architecture, this hardware redesign introduces native support for low-precision formats alongside a rebuilt matrix engine specifically tuned for production-scale inference requirements. This step represents a meaningful generational shift, one that has moved the MI355X from a chip worth watching to one worth deploying.


Why are Cloud Providers Adopting the MI355X?

The MI355X delivers competitive performance at a lower cost per compute unit than alternative chips like the H200. AMD reported a 3.5X improvement in training performance between the MI300X and MI355X across MLPerf benchmarks, demonstrating strong production viability. AMD has also improved supply chain predictability, giving providers the confidence to build MI355X capacity into their long-term infrastructure roadmaps. 

Deploying the MI355X is also streamlined, with the OAM form factor being the same as the MI300X models. This allows for the same server motherboards to be compatible across both chips and prevents cooling systems from needing to be redesigned to fit the different hardware. With this plug-and-play deployment, rack scaling becomes easier and allows multiple generations of GPU to be housed in the same data centers without significant restructuring. For providers managing large fleets of accelerators, this compatibility directly reduces capital expenditure and deployment timelines.

Beyond per-unit cost, the MI355X's memory capacity also reduces total infrastructure spend, with AMD reporting up to 40% better tokens-per-dollar than the NVIDIA B200. Given its memory capacity, enterprises can run larger models, longer contexts, and bigger KV caches on fewer accelerators, reducing both hardware footprint and the complexity of the model sharding across nodes. 

AMDs computing platform ROCm is also preferred by many providers due to its open source, allowing community based AI HPC tools to be implemented, including things like the HIP system, capable of  porting CUDA without extensive re-writes, and ROCm diagnostic tools like ROCProfiler & ROCProfiler-SDK, providing hardware counters, memory tracking, in depth API tracing. The system features an open source stack on GitHub that allows developers to inspect and modify existing layers of the system. 

For providers, the MI355X delivers a highly competitive triad of performance, cost, and operational simplicity; and the customers running workloads on this infrastructure are beginning to see the benefits directly.


Accelerating Customer Workloads

For teams running LLM inference at scale, those leveraging MI355X infrastructure have noticed two immediate benefits: the ability to run larger models at lower cost, and access to the kind of memory headroom that makes frontier-scale training runs practical. This means customers are able to think bigger, experimenting with larger models, longer context windows, and more complex training runs, without the constraint of hardware economics. 

Modular has notably leveraged the MI355X infrastructure to scale inference workloads that would otherwise require significantly more hardware with previous generations. With the capacity these chips offer and the software capabilities Modular deploys on them, enterprise customers can run larger, more complex models without the overhead of additional hardware.

Moreh has also utilized the MI355X to optimize vLLM serving and create seamless cluster orchestration between hardware and application layers. Their replacement for vLLM, running on MI355X chips, offers 2x higher throughput while keeping the same API and model formats. The result is a higher-performing stack, at a lower cost, without requiring any hardware restructuring. The orchestration layer can also schedule and gather resources automatically across the cluster eliminating the need for manual GPU placement or load balancing. Because the integration layer is below the API layer, a new backend can be developed in segments and then tested with existing layers before a full cutover. 

The MI355X has shifted the conversation from “can AMD compete” to “what can customers build,” delivering a highly capable, cost efficient ecosystem. With 3.5x increased performance since the first MI300X on MXFP8, in only a year of availability the MI355X will continue being a staple in the data center and AI infrastructure landscape as we anticipate what the MI455X will bring. 


ROCm Ecosystem

The MI355X operates on AMD’s open-source ROCm software stack. While some older models had the reputation of being behind CUDA, ROCm 7.2.4 demonstrates that the gap is virtually closed. Direct investment from AMD and community contributions have matured the stack's driveability, kernel performance, and library support, to the point where switching to a ROCm system is no longer the challenging task it once was. 

The 7.0 system included an expanded PyTorch and JAX framework compatibility, allowing for models to run across a broader range of frameworks without custom adaptation work. Due to it being a fully open-source stack, ROCm also provides enterprises with a level of transparency and architectural flexibility that is unavailable within closed, proprietary ecosystems. 

ROCm 7.0 introduced optimizations designed to take advantage of the capabilities of the MI355X and CDNA4 architecture.


The AMD Instinct Momentum

The MI355X doesn’t just function as another GPU, but is part of a broader ecosystem in multi-accelerator cloud AI. For scalers, this comes as larger capacities, hardware compatibility across generations, and the operational flexibility to meet diverse customer workload demands without significant infrastructure retooling. 

For enterprise customers, it means more ways to run large-scale inference, fine-tuning, and training, at a fraction of the cost. Combining higher memory capabilities, improved throughput, and a flexible software ecosystem means enterprises no longer have to choose between performance and affordability. The result is a more flexible path to production AI.
